MUNDANE MYSTERIES: How much time is a “Jiffy”?

We’ve all said it before “be there in a jiffy!” but how long is an actually “Jiffy”? Is it actually a unit of time?

It is! it is believed that the word was first used in 1779 to describe the length of a heartbeat or blinking of an eye. It’s typically 0.01 seconds, or 10 milliseconds long. An updated example of how long it is in the computer age would be the tick of the computer’s clock system.

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Exciting News For One of America’s Most Endangered Species

For years now America’s national bird, the bald eagle, has been heading toward extinction. But now that seems to have all changed!

A new report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says there are now over 316,000 bald eagles in the lower 48 states.  That’s four times what it was just 12 years ago! How crazy is that?

Fly on, bald eagles. Your time is now.

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What are Peeps actually made of?

MUNDANE MYSTERIES: What are Peeps actually made of?

With Easter coming up next weekend it seems like a good time to investigate what is in one of the most popular Easter candy treats… Peeps.

Personally I’m not that big a fan of Peeps. But I’ve always been intrigued by what they’re made out of. Lucky for you I found out!

This is the description from Vox.com:

In their traditional form, Peeps are shaped like baby chickens and made of a soft marshmallow rolled in colored sugar, with eyes made of edible wax. They are typically sold in packs of five conjoined marshmallows. One serving of Peeps (five pieces) contains 140 calories, no fat, and 34 grams of sugar, which makes sense since their two main ingredients are sugar and corn syrup. Peeps also contain gelatin, which makes them unsuitable for vegans.

And here is the ingredients list from their website: SUGAR, CORN SYRUP, GELATIN, CONTAINS LESS THAN 0.5% OF THE FOLLOWING: POTASSIUM SORBATE (A PRESERVATIVE), NATURAL FLAVORS, BLUE #1, CARNAUBA WAX

I’m still not a fan but at least I now know what they’re made of.
